| 2024-02-26 12:00:00Z | Feb. 26, 2024 | David Makowsky, Dir, Ukrainian Cultural Village | Connections Past and Present: Alberta and Ukraine | Feb. 26, 2024 12:00 p.m. |
This presentation will explore the strong relationship that exists between Albertans and Ukrainians today. It will explore early Ukrainian settlement in Alberta, the role of the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village to preserve this story, and how Alberta’s Ukrainian community has grown and become enriched over successive waves of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. David Makowsky is the Director of the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, an open-air museum that provides an interactive exploration of early Alberta settlement history by delivering true-to-life experiences and educational programs based on the Ukrainian experience. As part of his role, David is also administratively responsible for nine provincial historic sites owned and operated by Alberta Arts, Culture and Status of Women. The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village Society was founded in 1971 to develop a heritage village commemorating the settlement of east central Alberta by Ukrainians. Soon after, the Society bought the present site and began relocating buildings there from farms and towns of east central Alberta. The Province of Alberta acquired the site in 1975, and continues to interpret the major theme of “Early Ukrainian Settlement in East Central Alberta to 1930.” Since that time, more than 40 buildings have been moved to the UCHV where they have been researched, restored, and furnished to their early 20th century appearance. The museum also has a multi-purpose visitor centre with exhibit gallery spaces to provide a closer understanding of early Ukrainian settlement in east central Alberta. | 2024-03-04 12:00:00Z | Mar. 04, 2024 | Author Neil Gower | “A Metis Man’s Dream: From Traplines to Tugboats” | Mar. 04, 2024 12:00 p.m. |
Neil Gower loves the North, the area around Great Slave Lake, and old tugboats. He holds a B.A. in history and an LL.B. from the UofA. Gower has worked extensively in the North, beginning with four summers working for Northern Transportation Co. Ltd, and then practising law (primarily as a legal aid defense lawyer) in Hay River 1975 to 1977 and for business clients throughout the NWT thereafter. A strong supporter of northern business and Indigenous learning, Gower is a fifth generation western Canadian. Gower's family has been involved in and focused on the history of the great northwest ever since. Gower's love of northern history and admiration of Gordon Gill's initiative and dedication fueled his desire to tell a unique story of "A Metis Man's Dream..." Gill's life of struggle and success, opportunities seized and lost, and continuous adaptation mirror the tremendous changes in Canada's North over the last half Twentieth Century. Gower reveals the remarkable "life and times" of a pioneering metis entrepreneur against a backdrop of significant historical transitiions in Northern development, lifestyles, marine transportation, mining, and petroleum exploration. Now retired Gower is a writer living in Edmonton. He was a lawyer and long time friend of Gordon Gill, metis shipbuilder. |

Myrna was born and raised in Germany and moved to Canada in 2011 together with her husband Chris and as well as the rest of the family - 2 horses and 4 cats at that time.
In the German education system, she studied law and is a certified knowledge management system developer. Working in IT, she has managed projects on all levels and all types of business environments and was responsible for the business relationship between the largest energy provider in Europe with Microsoft, and SAP before moving to Canada. Living in Canada, professionally she started as a Licenced Immigration Consultant and is now working with her husband Chris in their own IT and Security company. Being involved in all kinds of things her whole life, Myrna received an award for outstanding involvement in extracurricular activities from her high school, was the first female chair of the law student council of the University of Wuerzburg and was a member of the cross-faculty student council. Right now, residing on an acreage in Parkland County, she is on the board of a horse rescue and the family consists of 3 dogs, 4 cats, 4 horses and 3 foster horses – but that’s a very fluent condition. Her husband Chris was a Rotarian in Germany – in a Club that allowed women to become members in 2011. Learning and experiencing the differences in the world of Rotary, she joined the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove in Nov 2015, hosted Youth Exchange Students, and joined the District Youth Exchange Team in 2018. She was president of the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove in 2022-2023, is currently Assistant Governor for District 5370 for Area 5 and is visiting today in her role as chair of District 5370's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee. |
